Obtaining a Business License or Business Tax Certificate is only one small part of starting a new business in Tallahassee, Florida.

If your business is within the city limits of Tallahassee, you are no longer required to obtain an Occupational license (Business Tax Certificate) from the City of Tallahassee. However, if you plan to do business as a Corporation, Limited Liability Company, or even as a Sole Proprietor, you must register with the Florida Department of State. If your business does not operate as a corporation and you plan to run your business under a name other than your own full name, you will need to register the business with a FICTICIOUS name.

If your business plans on selling tangible personal property, being that Florida is a Sales and Use Tax state, the State of Florida requires retail stores and some other businesses to collect sales tax. Businesses must apply for a sales tax certificate. In Tallahassee you can go to the State Department of Revenue on Delta Blvd (off of John Knox) or you can apply online.
